Prerequisites

C1 level in French (Common European Framework of Reference).

Main themes

- phonetic and phonological systems of present day standard French;
- main pronunciation problems of present day standard French;
- phonetic and phonological systems of various languages (Spanish, Arabic, Italian, English, German, Vietnamese etc.);
- difficulties experienced by non-Francophones in acquiring French;
- hypotheses for solutions., using corrective methods.

Aims

At the end of the course, the future teachers of French as a foreign language will be able to understand the phonetic and phonological difficulties experienced by non-Ffrancophones in acquiring the phonetic system of present- day sStandard French, and to suggest solutions for these difficulties.

Evaluation methods

Written examination (half of the final mark).

Presentations given in class during the course (half of the final mark providing  the written examination is satisfactory).

The course includes lectures and presentations prepared by the students.

Content

This course is intended for future teachers of French as a foreign language. It is aimed at  analysing the difficulties faced by non-Francophone students in acquiring  the phonetic and phonologic system of the present day standard French.
A first theoretical part will deal with the the phonological system of French and other languages from the point of view of acoustic and articulatory phonetics. Different corrective methods will also be introduced.
In the next part, students are required to collect and analyse recordings of non-Francophone speakers from different countries. They will also devise a programme with the aim of finding a solution for the difficulties which have emerged.
