Prerequisites

LGLOR1415.
For students following the minor in Antiquity : to attend a course of oriental language (Languages in Cuneiform writing and/or Ancient Egyptian) from the first term.

Main themes

The seminar deals with the following themes:

1. Oriental studies as a discipline in itself, with its historiography as well as its epistemological aspects and its own methodology;
2. A specific introduction to one or several disciplines of Oriental studies with their historic and cultural aspects;
3. A research training in one or several disciplines of Oriental studies, with a view to the writing a small work of research.

Aims

At the end of this seminar, the student will have acquired, in one specific field of Oriental studies, the research tools to enable him to carry out a first research work on a given theme.

Evaluation methods

No exam in session. The final mark takes account of the four activities of the program (cfr "Content") : a (20%), b (30%), c (20%), d (30%).

Teaching methods

Once having chosen one of the three modules, the student will follow the activities for it, do the required exercises, accumulate the appropriate credits and carry out the set work, which is to be handed in at the beginning of the exam session.

Content

This seminar, presented by a team of lecturers is organised in three modules of which the student will choose one:
1. Near East and Ancient Egypt;
2. Jewish, Christian and Islamic East ;
3. India and the Far East.

The student will build up the course credits proposed by the module lecturers from one of the following activities:
a. Training in specific research (bibliographic, initiation in available research tools and online resources);
b. Production of a work of ten or so pages (excluding bibliography, appendices and illustrations) on a subject chosen in conjunction with a promoter;
c. Deepening of the knowledge gained via the course LGLOR1415 in the field of writings, languages and literature;
d. Introduction to cultural aspects of Oriental civilisation through the reading of scientific works, conferences, museum or exhibition visits, ... (summary or visit report required).
