Prerequisites

1. being interested in foreign language teaching methodology, linguistics and culture;
2. having passed the courses of 'Civilisation néerlandaise' and of Dutch linguistics of the bachelor study in Dutch langue and literature;
3. good proficiency in spoken and written Dutch (level B2+ in terms of the CEFR)
 

Main themes

The aim of the seminar is to study the role of culture in the courses of Dutch as a Foreign Language in secondary schools and to develop a critical approach of certain methodological aspects of the teaching of Dutch as a Foreign Language.

In a more practical part model lessons will have to be prepared and articles will be analyzed dealing with a.o. language methodology, language testing, vocabulary acquisition, teaching of culture.

Aims

By the end of the course the student: should be able to integrate the cultural dimension in his teaching of Dutch as a foreign language and he should be familiar with the linguistic aspects of this teaching. He should, moreover, be able to express a critical view about teaching methods.

Evaluation methods

Preparation of a series of lessons incorporating the different elements dealt with during the workshops and the oral presentation in the exam in January and in August.

Teaching methods

Flipped classroom, attendance at workshops relating to the didactics of language teaching, and reading recent scientific articles relating to multilingualism.

Content

The workshops will focus on specific didactic aspects of the teaching of Dutch as a foreign language. Students will be invited to read articles and prepare suitable teaching material. Students will then present their work in an oral exam
