Basic knowledge in political science, law and history.

Main themes

- Overview of European integration theories.

- Application of these theoretical models to empirical questions of EU politics and policy-making.

Aims

To develop the students’ understanding of the theories used to explain the European integration process, by introducing and evaluating the main schools of thought in European integration theory.

Evaluation methods

Written or oral examination.

Content

- Introduction to theorizing the European integration process.

- Classical integration theories : federalism, (neo-)functionalism, liberal intergovernmentalism.

- Current perspectives on European integration : governance, multi-level governance, policy networks, new-institutionalism, social constructivism, Europeanization, political economy.
