Main themes The course is articulated around field-related subjects.
Aims The course aims at developing the communication skills (mainly reading, listening and speaking). Reading Comprehension: - The student should be able to understand a wide range of texts concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt particular attitudes or viewpoints - The student should be able to understand the essential meaning of standard texts related to his/her particular field of specialization. Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Listening Comprehension: - The student should be able to understand an informal conversation in standard Dutch on everyday subjects or topics of personal or professional interest. - The student should be able to understand the main points of a radio or television programme in standard language about current events. - The student should be able to understand a radio or television programme related to his/her particular field of specialization. Level B2 of the Common European Framework for Languages Speaking Skills: - The student should be able to express himself fluently and with precision on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life. - The student should be able to present clear descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to philosophical issues and to the history of Flanders and Flemish art. Level B1+ of the "Common European Framework of Reference for languages" Writing Skills: - The student should be able to write personal letters describing experiences and impressions. - The student should be able to write short reports, passing on information and giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view. Level B1- of the Common European Framework of Reference for languages Code Vocabulary : - consolidation and review of the basic vocabulary - increase of the standard vocabulary - broadening of the student's range of specialized vocabulary Grammar : - consolidation of the command of the basic structures as well as the more complex structures of the Dutch language The use of vocabulary and grammar is seen from a communicative viewpoint. Nevertheless, accuracy is not neglected. Culture: In the development of all the above-mentioned skills the course will aim at making the student aware of Dutch and Flemish cultural aspects. Emphasis will be laid on his/her particular field of specialization
Content The field-related vocabulary is presented in written or spoken texts linked to the students'domain, that are also used to exercise and develop reading and listening strategies and to introduce communication skills. The vocabulary, the structures and the oral communication skills are exercised and consolidated by means of written and oral production (roleplays, debates, presentations, ...).
Other information Prerequisites: The student should have followed the first year course of lower intermediate level (NEER 1250) or a course of similar level, corresponding to the B1 level of the "Common European Framework of Reference for languages". Assessment: - Continuous assessment (summative and formative), - Written exam, - Oral exam. Course material Course notes: "Néerlandais de sciences humaines" + videotapes used in the language laboratory. Reading file with exercises Gramlink Training staff: Lessons in groups of max. 25 students The teacher is available during his office-hour(s) and can be contacted by e-mail. Guidance is also provided at the Self-tuition Center (CAA) and the Multimedia Room Workload - Classroom hours : 60 hours - Self-study : 30 hours
