Main themes

The training course lasts three months, either in a public library, or in an academic library, or in a documentation centre, or in a consulting company managing documentation. In cooperation with the director welcoming him, the student takes part in and observes the daily life in the various services (reception and greeting the public, catalography and technical services, software, programmes, the mobile library if such exists'). He analyzes opportunities and drawbacks of the library. He takes part in ongoing debates of the 'trade', aware of the directors' prospective reflections. With their assistance, he defines a precise question to develop, provides a state of the art treatment and finally proposes scenarios answering the question. Presenting the library's public reception services (opportunities and drawbacks) and the question of audits are the subject of a training course report to be defended orally before the report's readers.

Aims

After the training course HIST9533, the student studies in-depth questions of management either of a public library, or of an academic library, or of an information centre. This research can also be done in a consulting company managing documentation.

Evaluation methods

The final grade is a synthesis of evaluations made by the directors of the welcoming library and by the readers of the training course report. They evaluate the written part and the oral defense.
