Prerequisites

LFLTR1760 or a course deemed equivalent by the lecturer.

Main themes

This course, to be taken in parallel with LGLOR 1142, deals with the following themes:
1. The essential structures of Latin syntax, in particular adverbial clauses;
2. A personal translation of a Latin text (cursory reading).
For students doing a Minor in Latin Studies, this course, worth 3 credits, includes a reduced cursory reading.

Aims

A systematic study of classical Latin grammar.
At the end of this course, the student will have mastered the essential rules of the verbal syntax of classical Latin. He will also be capable of translating and analysing Latin prose texts of reduced difficulty, and to translate from French into Latin (elementary level).

Evaluation methods

One or two tests will be organised during the session.
The final exam (written) tests theoretical and practical competence, including French into Latin translation.

Teaching methods

Lectures are coupled with practical exercises (Latin French and French Latin translations).

Content

Based on a detailed study of the fundamental rules of Latin syntax, in particular the syntax of subordinate clauses (the use of subordinate conjunctions; the use of tenses and moods).The constructions studied are illustrated by a linguistic analysis of classical sentences and texts. This practice includes an initiation into  the grammar, as well as the personal translation of a text (a reading of an extract from Caesar's Gallic Wars).
