1. Study of German phonology and morphology;
2. Reading of scientific work within this field;
3. Critical discussion of the relevant concepts.

Aims

Acquisition of the foundations of German linguistics with respect to German Phonetics/Phonology and German Morphology. The most fundamental empirical generalizations from the two linguistic fields will be discussed and the theoretical instruments for explaining them within modern linguistic theory.

Evaluation methods

Evaluation : * Partial (written) test in German, optional. The test will be written at the end of the first quadrimester. * General (written) test in German, obligatory. The test will be written in June and September.

Content

The studies will be accompanied by exercises in linguistic argumentation. The students begin to read literature on linguistics (phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax); and they begin to develop linguistic analyses and to evaluate linguistic argumentation with respect to phonetics/phonology, and morphology. Phonetics/Phonology: German consonants and German vowels, International phonetic alphabet for German (Transcriptions), phonemes, phonological rules of German, basic concepts of linear and non-linear phonology, rule ordering, syllables. Morphology: Categories of words, morphemes, morphological processes (derivation, inflection, composition), lexical semantics.
