Main themes The topics addressed in class aim at arousing the undergraduates' interests in English-speaking countries' culture and history, both past and present.
Aims Reading comprehension At the end of the course, the students should be able to: - grasp the content and significance of articles and reports on topics connected with their interests or their jobs. Level B1 of the « Common European Framework of References for Languages ». Listening comprehension At the end of the course, the students should be able to: - understand the gist of TV programmes concerning general topics and oriented towards their fields of interest in standard and clearly articulated English language. Level B1 of the « Common European Framework of References for Languages ». Speaking At the end of the course the students should be able to: - give their opinion on general topics (education, advertising, media, culture, …) covered in class. Level B1- of the « Common European Framework of References for Languages ». Usage: 1) revision and reinforcement of intermediate vocabulary in context, 2) grammar revision
Content Content: Portfolio of texts and videos: the set texts range from historic/al sources to today's specialized literature and vary in language registers to include prose, speeches, poetry, songs, video scripts … from several target-language countries. Some are meant to be skimmed, scanned, analyzed, compared or discussed. Methodology: 30 hours of teacher-led classes featuring pair and team work - Training learners to become autonomous readers of authentic written documents - Broadening the students' vocabulary scope - Teaching key grammar points such as tenses, auxiliaries, connectives and the passive voice. 30 hours of organised tutorials (partly done in the language lab): speaking (15 hours) and listening exercises (15 hours). - listening decoding strategies in a foreign language - role plays, debates, discussions - English pronunciation and stress patterns. As regards speaking skills, the emphasis will be on fluency rather than accuracy.
Other information Prerequisites: Level A2 of the « Common European Framework of References for Languages ». Assessment: Large-group Course Written Exam - Targeted vocabulary testing such as substitution, matching, MCQ, fill-in exercises; - Grammatical in-context translation and a matching exercise; - Text analysis and source comparison. Tutorials: - Continuous assessment, - Listening comprehension exam, - Oral exam. Course material: Coursenotes ANGL 1811 Training staff - Each teacher is available at least one hour a week during office hours and can be contacted by email; - Extra help available at the Self-tuition centre and Multimedia room. Tutorials: - One teacher for group of max. 25 students
