Main themes The theme of the seminar depends on its articulation with other courses and concerns aspects of (spoken or written) French phonectis/phonology, morphology, lexicon, syntax, discourse/pragmatics.
Aims The seminar is centred on a yearly defined theme, related to the functioning of the French language (spoken or written). It gives the students the opportunity to make up a state of the art about the selected theme and to lead a personal research based on the analysis of authentic data, gathered by the students or during former research.
Evaluation methods

The assessment is based on students' personal research, which will be presented verbally during a special session of the seminar and synthesized in a written report.

Teaching methods

The seminar sessions will alternate between teacher's lectures on linguistic perception, discussions of seminal articles and exercises on the methods of perceptual surveys.

Content

The seminar will address the question of perception in linguistics, a more precisely the question of categorization (identification and evaluation) of regional accents in French-speaking Belgium. The seminar will start with a general introduction on the questions around perception and will henceforth examine the results of several important research works in the field, with the help of reference articles. A main focus will be put on methodological issues, in a way to allow the students to carry out their own research survey.
