Main themes

In order to achieve those aims, this course will cover the following topics: 

  • variation in language use according to communicative situation;
  • variation in language use according to speaker's socioeconomic level;
  • transcription of oral informal-style texts in modern Spanish;
  • intonation in modern Spanish;
  • rules, structure and units of analysis in conversation;
  • characteristics of conversation at syntactical level;
  • characteristics of conversation at phonological and prosodic level; 
  • characteristics of conversation at semantic- lexical level;
  • connection and argumentation in conversation;
  • hedging and boosting in conversation and politeness theory.
Aims

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • transcribe recordings of naturally occurring talk-in-interaction in modern Spanish using the International Phonetic Alphabet;
  • analyse naturally occurring talk 'in-interaction in modern Spanish: to identify the type of text, the structure,  the units of analysis, describe its style (informal vs. formal style, standard vs. substandard) according to its characteristics at phonological, prosodic, lexical, semantic, morphological, syntactical, informative and discursive levels;
  • make the difference in a given oral text between variation in language use according to the user  and variation according to the communicative situation, and more specifically, between low sociolect and informal style; 
  • link linguistic forms occurring in talk-in-interaction with certain extra-linguistic variables such as the speaker's socioeconomic level, age and/or sex.
Evaluation methods

- Oral exam(12/20) 

-Written exam (8/20): applying the analysis of one the themes treated in class to a limited corpus chosen by the student

Content

The course mainly aims at enhancing the application of the linguistic analysis. The students will have to read scientific articles concerning the main themes. The course will consist of a more detailed explanation of the articles as well as the application of the analyses to the main themes.
