The course aims to develop the following competences and knowledge of the student :
" Knowledge of the main classical and contemporaries approaches in sociology of professions : function-nalist, interactionist, marxist, neo-weberian
" Capacity to analyse the main constitutive dimensions of professionnal groups : professional identity, segment and borders, mandate, licence, relations and hierarchy, competencies and expertise, education and training, ethos, relations to clients, the organisation, the State, to the other professional groups
" Capacity to study a empirical professional group, either in a synchronic and in a socio-historic perspec-tive
Main themes
The lecture will focus on classical and contempories approaches of professional groups, both francophone and anglophone, looking for their convergencies and divergencies but also their cumulative character.

" Historical development of the "professions"
" Social caracteristics of the "professions"and classical approaches : functionnalism, interactionism, neo-weberian and neo-marxist approaches
" Main analytical dimensions of the study of professionnal groups : mandate,licence, identity, career, competences and training, inter-group competition and struggles, borders etc.
" Field work on various professional groups (ie policemen, nurses, teachers, lawyers, artists, managers etc)
" Stakes and current changes occuring to professional groups
o professional groups and State changes
o professional groups and globalisation (including european (de) regulations)
o knowledge society and professional groups
o professional groups and modern organisations
