The objective of the elementary course is A2 level of the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages" (European Council). No credits will be allocated for the students of the first year ESPO.
In COMU/SOCA/HUSO/SPOL: students who attend this course in BAC1 have to follow the course ALLE 1330 (B1 level) in BAC 2.
In ECGE/INGE students who attend this course during the first term in BAC1 have to attend the course ALLE 1230 (B1 level) during the second term.
Reading Comprehension
At the end of the course, the student should be able:
- to read short and simple texts
- to find a piece of information in everyday documents such as advertisements, menus, timetables
- to understand simple personal letters.

Listening Comprehension
At the end of the course, the student should be able:
Individually :
- to understand very frequent vocabulary related to familiar/everyday life (e.g. him/herself, family, shopping )
- to grasp the main point of simple and clear messages and advertisements
Interactively :
- to understand enough to be able to answer to concrete needs, provided the other person talks slowly and clearly.

Speaking Skills
At the end of the course, the student should be able:
Individually :
- to talk in simple language (descriptive mode) about him/herself, his/her family, other people, close environment and living conditions.
Interactively :
- to communicate in simple and usual tasks for which only simple and direct exchange of information is needed.

Writing Skills
At the end of the course, the student should be able:
- to write a short postcard, a menu, a simple ad slogan, a day's schedule.
- to write down personal information in a questionnaire (nationality, address, age )

Code:
Knowledge of the basic vocabulary (1500 to 2000 words) and structures of German (spelling rules; gender and plurals of nouns; adjective agreement; comparatives and superlatives; definite, indefinite and numeral determiners; structure of simple clauses (incl. inversion) and complex clauses (coordinate and subordinate), including the place of complements, conjugation of verbs, auxiliaries, irregular verbs, double infinitive, pronouns and pronominal adverbs, negation)
As far as speaking skills are concerned, the course focuses more on communicative skills than on correction, although attention is still paid to the latter .
Culture:
For all the skills aforementioned: introduction to German culture.
Main themes
The course is structured around different subjects (e.g. hobbies, travel, home, advertisement, ) related to the general (non-specific) domain.
Content and teaching methods
Revision, reinforcement and expansion (in context) of the basic vocabulary and grammar, as well as training of receptive and productive language skills. The acquisition is based on authentic documents (reading and listening comprehension). Basic vocabulary and structures are practiced, reinforced and expanded via written and oral exercises (role-plays, interviews, conversations in small groups of 2 or 4, ...).

Prerequisites ( Ideally in terms of skills):
Students must have followed a program of at least 2 hours a week during the last two years at secondary school or having at least A1 level of the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages" (European Council)
The students of the first year ESPO will first have to inform the secretariat of their faculty about their choice of second language. They will then have access to a placement test. In function of the marks they will obtain, different possibilities of remediation will be recommended if necessary. Among these possibilities the course ALLE 1130 will be offered. Those who will choose to attend this course have to know that no credits will be allocated for this remediation course (cf. Décret Bologne" of the French Community of Belgium).
