At the end of this module, the student will be able to express him/herself in French in the professional contexts in which she/he lives. According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, a student, at level B2, "can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussion in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving advantages and disadvantages of various options". Can express him/herself fluently on scientific matters and in situations related to university (in seminars, research, teaching activities, framing work). There is an emphasis on scientific language and on the language skills needed in a university environment (for seminars, research, activities in and outside the classroom)
Main themes
To fulfil these objectives, teaching activity will focus on the following topics :
- Listening to authentic professional documents ( scientific texts, lectures, video) ;
- Writing essay reports and several texts ;
- Taking part in a scientific meeting ;
- Giving a short talk and debate (with power point supports) ;
- Asking for technical information and explaining a viewpoint.

A course for students enrolled at the UCL (Erasmus and non Erasmus) who take FRAN 1001 as a faculty or as an optional course as well as for free students (étudiants libres) who are not enrolled at the UCL.
