At the end of this module, the student will be able to read and listen to documents of level B1 or B2 (CEF). He/she will be able to enter unprepared into conversation on topics that are familiar and pertinent to everyday life (family, academic issues, current events...).The student "can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, (academic life), leisure, etc¿Can deal with most situations likely to arise (in a French-speaking country). Can produce simple connected texts on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans"(in Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
Main themes
To fulfil these objectives, teaching activity will focus on the following topics :
- listening to authentic video documents (TV reports or shows, films, songs) ; understanding global meaning;
- taking part in conversations, sustaining dialogues ;
- asking for and giving information about work, family, country, accommodation, healthcare¿
- memorizing dialogues ;
- phonetics ;
- oral presentations ;
- focus on verbs (morphology), present, past tenses, future tenses, articles an prepositions ;
- writing short e-mails, letters, descriptions ;
- discovering Belgian and French-speaking cultures.

FRAN 1011- "academic ouvertures", course for complete beginners
- A course for students enrolled at the UCL (Erasmus and non Erasmus) who take FRAN 1011 as a faculty or as an
optional course as well as for free students (étudiants libres) who are not enrolled at the UCL.

Pre-requisite: french alphabet.
Number of hours, rythm, terms
120 h, 8 h / week, in the second quadrimester.
Aim
At the end of the course, students are expected to have reached a A2 level (CEF) in writing and speaking, and a A2 or B1 level in reading and listening.
Methods and contents
The course is given in French by a native speaker in accordance to interactive communication. In this course, students :
- work on authentic documents;
- use and practise grammar in oral and written situations;
- take part in conversations;
- discover Belgian and French speaking cultures.
