At the end of this module, the student will be able to read and listen to documents of level A2 or B1 (CEF). The student will be able to express him/herself in French in familiar social and academic contexts, to take part in basic interactions, to write short, simple texts of level A2. According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, at level A2, a student "can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need".
Main themes
To fulfil these objectives, teaching activity will focus on the following skills and topics :
- Listening to short, authentic documents (radio and TV programmes, songs); understanding global meaning
- Memorizing dialogues and acting out conversations;
- Phonetics;
- Oral presentations;
- Outing,
- Asking for and giving information about work, family, country, accomodation, healthcare
- Grammar: present and future tenses, introduction to past tenses (passé composé), articles and prepositions
- Writing e-mails, short letters, postcards;
- Discovering Belgian and French-speaking cultures.

FRAN 1001 - French - " French step by step " - a course for beginners.
A course for students enrolled at the UCL (Erasmus and non Erasmus) who take FRAN 1001 as a faculty or
as an optional course as well as for free students (étudiants libres) who are not enrolled at the UCL.

Aim
At the end of the course, students are expected to have reached a A2 level (CEF) in speaking, listening and writing and a B1 level in reading.
Method and contents
The course is given in French by a native speaker in accordance to interactive communication. In this course, students :
work on authentic documents;
use and practise grammar in oral and written situations;
take part in conversations;
discover Belgian and French speaking cultures.
